University of Siena - Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione e Scienze Matematiche
July 4-5, 7-8, 11-12 h. 10-13; July 6 h. 10-12.
Duration of the course: 20 hours
The course gives an introduction to functional analysis, which is a branch of analysis in which one develops analysis in infinite dimensional linear spaces. The central concepts which are studied, are normed spaces with emphasis on Banach and Hilbert spaces and linear operators between such spaces. Spectral theory for self-adjoint compact operators is studied in some detail, and applications are given to differential equations with emphasis on Sturm-Liouville problems.. Hints on calculus of variations are also in order.
